San Diego Pool League / Association League History



FALL 1978 - Season I.
First organized by Steve Kapelczak and Mel Manula, named "Stick Strokers". First member bars included The Club (2 teams), Brass Rail (2 teams), Barbary Coast (moved to Shadow's during remodeling), Diabblos, Club 540 and Nickelodeon. Teams consisted of 6 players and up to 3 subs. Eighteen games were played per match. $30.00 green fees per match, $20.00 sponsor fee and $2.50 membership card cost were collected. Contact with the bar owners, organization and collection of dues were by Steve Kapelczak and Mel Manula. AWARDS BANQUET: held at THE CLUB (8 teams). TOP TEAM: CLUB 540 Steve Holt, Jim Karales, Jerry Kane, Kirby Koopman. TOP INDIVIDUALS: Tom Leonhardt (NIC), Pete Champagne (NIC), Keith Ball (CLUB), Rickie Nolin (NIC).

SPRING 1979 - Season II.
Due to missing league funds and the coincidental disappearance of Mel Manula the league was turned over to Brass Rail Manager Buddy Delieu with the help of Pete Champagne of the Nickelodeon and Mark Myers of The Club. New score sheets are adopted with 4 regular players per team, 16 games per match. Teams were awarded 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss. Green fees reduced to $20.00, $10.00 per team. AWARDS BANQUET: held at BRASS RAIL (12 teams). TOP TEAM: SHADOWS Dave Anderson, Jimmie Stone, Ken Smith, Tom Leonhardt. TOP INDIVIDUALS: (1) Dave Anderson (SDW), (2) Molly Orrell (CLUB), (3) Rickie Nolin (NIC). SD Brass Rail team and leagues top 4 individuals participated in a best of 3 match with LA at the Brass Rail. LA sweeps SD.

FALL 1979 - Season III.
First election of officers at The Club. Bars must sponsor at least 2 teams. Term of office 3 seasons. BOARD OF OFFICERS: Dave Hackney (P), Eva (VP), Mark Myers (S/T). SPRING 1980 - Season IV.
New score sheet adopted. 1st season with 2 divisions. Steve Holt suggests name change to S.D.P.A., Secretary Fees of $1.00 per team per match. FALL 1980 - Season V.
First rewrite of rules. League changes its name to San Diego Pool Association. $10.00 registration fee per team. League does away with membership cards. SPRING 1981 - Season VI.

Membership elects to do away with point system for team matches and awards 1 point for every win with a total of 16 possible points per match. Fred Harris introduces certificates for table runs and 8-ball breaks, divisional awards and sponsor recognition. Second writing of S.D.P.A. rules and 1st Bylaws done by Fred Harris and Steve Holt. 1st handbook printed. Board expands to include a Head Referee. First league sponsored Broomstick Tournament is organized by Jim Elsner and Dave Carman. $300.00 is raised for AIDS Assistance Fund in the name of Brad Wilhite. FALL 1984 - Season XIII.
VP Mike Passante organizes Rules Committee for the purpose of discussing possible changes to S.D.P.A Rules and Bylaws, introduced first S.D.P.A. newsletter "Table Talk", designed new S.D.P.A. logo, has 1st S.D.P.A. T-shirts printed and proposes new divisional and playoff format. League gets 1st paid advertising in handbook. 1st substitute player playoffs held at CSF. S.D.P.A. banner is purchased. New divisional format accepted by captains (Divisions to be set with teams of equal skill and all teams to play each team within their division twice). Rules Committee formally approved by team captains as a preliminary forum for discussion of changes to any rules or bylaws. Team Fees raised to $16.00. SPRING 1985 - Season XIV.
First season with divisions ranked by skill. First Celebrity All-Star Broomstick Tournament played at Mr. Dillons. SDPA All-Star's defeat Celebrities 8-3, $200 raised for Lambda Pride. Divisional certificates retired. Trophies awarded to top 3 individuals and teams for each division. Mike Passante and Doyle Fisher re-organize Broomstick Tournament. Create Celebrity/All-Star Broomstick Tournament. Event held at Mr. Dillons, $1,187.00 raised for AIDS Assistance Fund. Mid-season vote favors purchase of Apple Computer from Steve Holt. Second half of season sees S.D.P.A.'s first computerized standings. HOLE #2 team member Kim Walker sets new league record with 12 table runs in one season with an unprecedented 4 in one match against the Fairmount Cabaret. Sponsor certificates are re-activated. For the first time in S.D.P.A. history, an "A" division team, Bourbon Street #1, defeats another "A" division team, Cheers #1 by a score of 16-0. The 1st Women's Competition held. Ball in hand anywhere on the table as the penalty for a foul approved by team captains. Term of office in increased to 4 seasons. League sells apple computer and purchases an IBM compatible. Call pocket rule approved by team captains. League histories compiled by Mike Passante and incorporated into players handbook. Mesa Distributing pays $1,100 for ads in the players handbook and WCC XIX Program. Mike Passante proposes and organizes the 1st Clemens Captains Classic. The Term of office is reduced to 2 seasons. Mayor O'Connor declares July 14-16 as West Coast Challenge Days in San Diego. Proclamation is presented.
